Harnessing emerging talent

Andrea Cousins delivers at the first Emerging Talent night of 2024.

Mid Canterbury Netball's Emerging Talent Squad for 2024 has come together for the first on court session of 2024.

Sporting flash new Emerging Talent t-shirts, the group came together on Friday night and participated in a session led by Andrea Cousins (Mid Canterbury's 2024 senior rep coach) and Claire Tappin (Mid Canterbury's 2022/23 U18 coach). Andrea delivered all around the fundamental attack skills, focusing on receiving the ball, turning fully and passing and cutting, while Claire delivered the fundamental defence skills focusing on position, footwork and how to get the ball

This year's Emerging Talent squad is 36-strong, with 12 U18 players and 24 U16 players, and 28 attended the first session, with the rest unable to make it due to other commitments. The squad was selected at the end of last season, and players invited to be a part of the 2024 programme.

The plan of our Emerging Talent programme this season is closely following the national Netball Development Camp programme that was held in Ashburton earlier this year.

Throughout the programme Mid Canterbury Netball will build and expand on these fundamental skills giving our Emerging Talent players a strong sound base leading into their netball season.

Session two of Emerging Talent 2024 is on Friday 1st of March where Kiana Gallon from NetballSmart will deliver around SmartPlayer/Health and giving our young female athletes the tools to look after themselves and their bodies in such a physical and mentally tough environment. She will also put them through fitness testing.

The next session will then be on Friday 22 March, leading in to a full weekend programme over March 23-24.
